Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential communities and assistance to seniors who require a helping hand with dressing or preparing meals. The types of service provided often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In certain instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or nursing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific rules related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with distribution, 24-hour care, and assistance with recreational activities. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. Staff are required to receive training in a number of subjects. These include: communicating with persons with dementia, behavior management, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, and 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living.
