Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individual assistance. The types of service provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with recreational activities, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, protective oversight, and nursing services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. Staff members obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: mentally confused residents, behavior management, communicating with persons with dementia, and (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
