An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers supervision, aid, and support to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities often provide supervision of care, support with daily activities, and opportunities for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, hospice, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with recreational activities, protective oversight, nursing services, and assistance with administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include communicating with persons with dementia, mentally confused residents, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, and 24 hours of additional training on interview skills. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
