Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individual help. The services provided often include assistance with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select cases, communities may provide hospice, “aging in place”, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific standards related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation licenses this community type. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, mentally confused residents, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, and promoting independence in activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , 24-hour care, assistance with storage of medications, and assistance with administration of medications.
