Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer regular social interaction and apartment style housing as well as personalized support. Services provided often include support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, respite, or “aging in place”. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with distribution, and 24-hour care. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: preservation of resident dignity, mentally confused residents, 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, and techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
