Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer social interaction, supervision, and care to people around 65 years old. The services offered often include support with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, dementia care, or nursing. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has specific statutes related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with recreational activities, assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with administration of medications, and assistance with storage of medications. Staff must receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include preservation of resident dignity, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, and mentally confused residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration.
