Assisted living communities provide coordinated social events and apartment style housing as well as individual care. Services offered often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In certain instances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing care, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, mentally confused residents, behavior management, and 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with recreational activities, assistance with administration of medications, 24-hour care, and assistance with activities of daily living .
