Assisted living communities administer social events, care, and oversight to people around 65 years old. Services provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or continuing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific statutes related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff must receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include mentally confused residents, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, behavior management, and promoting independence in activities of daily living. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with administration of medications, nursing services, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and assistance with recreational activities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided.
