Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and aid for persons who may need a helping hand with things such as showering or mobility. Services offered often include aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may provide skilled nursing, continuing care, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These include: (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, communicating with persons with dementia, and mentally confused residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, nursing services, protective oversight, and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician.
