An assisted living community is a residential community which administers support, care, and aid to medically stable persons who do not require skilled nursing support. Services offered often involve aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select instances, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or dementia care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . Michigan maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this type of community. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include residents rights and responsibilities, reporting requirements and documentation, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, and supervision. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, supervised personal care, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, and supporting a resident’s personal and social needs.
