Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers aid, support, and supervision to medically stable individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually provide opportunities for recreational activity, aid with the activities of daily life, and assistance with transit and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or continuing care. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . Michigan maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and medication supervision and administration. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisting a resident to keep appointments, guidance, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, and being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, and service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include staff training program based on the home’s program statement, standard precautions, containment of infectious disease, and staff training program based on the residents’ service plans. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
