Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings
What Else Should I Consider When Choosing a Facility?

Assisted Living in Clinton, Massachusetts

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is one kind of senior care that delivers residents support with activities of daily living (ADLs). Residents in assisted living can expect to receive support with ADLs that involve bathing, dressing, medication management, meals and more. Not to be mixed up with a skilled nursing facility where residents receive nursing services around the clock, residents in assisted living routinely have access to personnel 24 hours a day while likewise enjoying engaging activities and a solid sense of community. Sometimes, assisted living facilities give support for seniors with specific medical requirements such as for example cognitive impairment from Alzheimer’s disease or a related kind of dementia, diabetes, or incontinence care.

Deciding what type of senior care you or your family member needs is definitely a complex decision. To make certain you are choosing the right level of care, speak with a medical professional. You can also call our Senior Living Advisors who are ready to answer all of your questions and help you select a senior care facility that meets your needs.

What Services Are Available?

Amenities and solutions offered in assisted living can vary greatly in each facility. Generally, most communities offer a number of accommodation types, meal plans, transportation, and more.

Other services often found in assisted living include:

  • Medical services
  • Physical and rehabilitation therapies on-site and off-site
  • Activities and events calendar
  • Exercise and nutrition programs
  • Housekeeping services
  • Medication administration
  • Transportation services

How Do I Tour Assisted Living Facilities?

It is strongly suggested that you tour several assisted living facilities before choosing the best one for you or your loved one. Touring multiple facilities will help you discover what options can be found, what your own preferences are, and can ultimately help you make a decision. Call or contact A Place for Mom and we will help you organize a tour at your desired community.

Below are a few of the top questions you'll want to be ready to ask throughout your tour:

  • Are the current residents friendly and cheerful?
  • Are there any services not included in the monthly rate? If so, what are they and exactly how much do they cost?
  • Is a nurse usually available night and day?
  • Is an initial assessment required before entry?
  • Is there a waitlist? If so, how long might it be before you can move in?
  • Is there a courtyard or patio for residents to enjoy space outside?
  • What are your apartment accommodation alternatives?
  • What exactly are your billing and monthly payment policies and procedures?
  • What does the exterior of the facility look like? Is it neat and nice looking?
  • What is the staff-to-resident ratio? Are the team members involved? Nice?
  • What is your discharge policy?
  • What's your medication administration guideline?
  • What kind of know-how and schooling do your staff have?

Will Medicare Pay for Assisted Living?

As the “federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities and people with End-Stage Renal Disease,” Medicare can play an essential role in paying for some senior care.

But, it is necessary to comprehend what Medicare can pay for and what it will not. If the beneficiary has been in the hospital for at least three days, Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing care related to hospitalization for 100 days, if your doctor recommends it.

Medicare has four primary parts:

  1. Part A, Hospital Insurance: This can help pay for inpatient care in a hospital or skilled nursing community (following a hospital stay), home health care and hospice care.
  2. Part B, Medical Insurance: This helps pay for services supplied by doctors and additional healthcare providers, outpatient care, many preventive care services, durable medical equipment, and some home health care expenses.
  3. Part C, Medicare Advantage: These plans can be found in many areas. People with Medicare Parts A and B can want to receive all of their healthcare services, including Part D prescription drugs if a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan (MAPD) is selected, through among these provider organizations under Part C.
  4. Part D, Prescription Drug Coverage: This helps pay for prescription drugs.
  5. Medicare covers medically necessary skilled care at a nursing home only if you need short-term skilled care for an illness or personal injury and you meet certain conditions. To find out more on Medicare benefits, download A Place for Mom’s Medicare Resource Guide.

Can i See Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings in Massachusetts?

The state of Massachusetts offers great access to its assisted living facility records through it's Executive Office of Elder Affairs website. Available data includes licensed assisted living communities that are updated frequently, and info on assisted living licensing and violations.

In the state of Massachusetts, assisted living communities are required by law to:

  • Provide sufficient staff to look after residents, but aren't required to have a nurse on staff 24 hours a day
  • Provide assistance and oversight with bathing, dressing, and mobility to all or any residents which have these activities within their service plan
  • Provide each resident with a written service plan which includes a doctor’s assessment and evaluation

How Do I Choose the Right Assisted Living Community?

Choosing the assisted living community that's right for you as well as your loved one is one of the most crucial decisions you may make. Throughout your visit, consider the caliber of attention that a family member may receive. Your choice of “if, when and where to move” resides solely with you as well as your family, so consider what factors are actually important to you. You can also read through a few of the 536 reviews about communities in the greater Clinton area. Here are some facts to consider:

  • Activities: It’s smart to try to schedule your tour in conjunction with facility activities. Ask the manager if you can see the activities as well as participate. Are the activities and get-togethers well attended? Does the staff appear to be having fun with the activity as well? Take a look at the facility calendar of events. Do they match your loved one’s likes and dislikes? Do the activities and get-togethers vary in size and type? Do they include outings and trips from the facility? If it's important to you and your family, don’t forget to ask about faith based services.
  • Cleanliness: Will the community feel orderly and healthy? Be sure to look beyond furnishings and into baseboards, crevices, and windows. Ask how frequently housekeeping is supplied in the non-public living space. Be sure to get complete information on the types of repair provided and the expected response times. Don’t forget to ask about laundry procedures. Request specifics on what's available and at what price.
  • Friendliness: The frame of mind and friendliness of the personnel are of the utmost importance. Make sure that you observe several staff members interacting with current occupants. Do they listen and make eye contact? Make sure to acquire a good understanding of the staffing pattern. How many people are actually involved in residents’ care? Be sure you obtain an introduction to the management group. This can help you understand the goals of the facililty. It is important that you have confidence in the property’s personnel.
  • Meals: Much like the majority of us, the dining area experience is vital to seniors. When visiting communities, it is necessary to go over entree choices and learn about dining hours, options, and procedures. Be sure you and your loved one try a meal at facility. It's not only the best way to sample the cuisine, but it’s a great chance to meet other residents. Make sure you discuss what goes on if a resident is not able to make it to the dining room for meals.
  • Reputation: Ask people and families, past and present, for their honest views about the community. Various facilities include a resident council that will be happy to answer any of your questions.
  • Safety and security: Safety and security features are extremely important and offer reassurance for the caregiver. Ensure that bathrooms are easy to get to and also have grab bars in convenient places. Ask how residents contact the staff if they have a crisis in their living area. Learn about other protection features available in living quarters and through the entire community. Make sure you find out about staffing patterns to determine who's on-site usually to aid residents. Is there registered nurses on-site? How do staffing schedules differ during the night? How does the community assist or manage people’ medication requests?
  • Trust your gut: When you are visiting, be sure to consider yourself or your loved one actually living at the community. Can you imagine your family member feeling happy? Do you feel at ease? Are the staff and residents receptive, inviting and friendly?

5 Questions to Ask When Touring an Assisted Living Community

There’s no question that choosing an assisted living community is often overwhelming. But, considering these five things when thinking about making the move to assisted living will help you make a better-educated decision:

  1. How many team members are on hand to assist during the night? Some assisted living communities provide nursing personnel night and day, while others may have more generalized help on hand after hours. It isn't required that around the clock care be offered in assisted living in Massachusetts.
  2. Is there a waitlist? Here is where doing your homework can seriously pay off - plan ahead of time! Popular facilities can fill fast. If the one you like is not available, ask about the waitlist and what the facility’s guideline is for handling it. Many facilities will require a deposit and some facilities have internal lists for special care needs.
  3. Will there be an outdoor space? Going to assisted living does not mean you or your family member needs to live without a beloved back garden or patio space. If the ability to access a gardening area, an outdoor patio or a courtyard is definitely important for your loved one, visit a community that offers residents that space. Many larger assisted living facilities offer a range of outdoor spaces, with features such as jogging paths, gardens and BBQ places for community occasions.
  4. What is the staff-to-resident ratio? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 25% of assisted living communities have a ratio of 1 personal care associate for every 23 residents. Staffing can vary widely depending on the size of the facility, so be sure to ask about the communities you would like. Ultimately, you want to know if this community will provide your family member with the help and support they need?
  5. What services are included in the monthly cost? Understand what is normally included in the basic fee structure and what might incur additional expense before signing any agreement. Some facilities employ a fee-for-service model, or a la carte pricing, which means they charge a monthly charge for rent and meals but additional charges for things such as medication management. Others might use a tiered cost model where different levels of care are charged different costs. Eldercare attorneys can review these contracts and assist you to with any discrepancies.
