Assisted living communities often provide help with daily activities, care supervision, and outings for leisurely activity. In some instances, communities may offer “aging in place”, skilled nursing care, or respite. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and assistance with activities of daily living . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding residents to take medications, management of self-administered medications, and reading the medication label to residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, a qualified dietitian must review residents’ dietary needs, residence must provide or arrange for the availability of food selections that would permit a resident to adhere to a diet consistent with the most recent edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and communities must use daily recommended dietary allowances as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff must receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include Resident health, 7-hour general orientation , resident bill of rights, and Job requirements.
