Assisted living communities offer apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individualized assistance. Assisted living communities frequently offer care supervision, help with appointments and transit, and aid with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, nursing, or respite. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . The state of Massachusetts maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs certifies this community type. Staff are required to receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include philosophy of independent living, Job requirements, Sanitation and food safety, and elder abuse and neglect. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, and assistance with activities of daily living . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include residence must provide or arrange for the availability of food selections that would permit a resident to adhere to a diet consistent with the most recent edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, a qualified dietitian must review residents’ dietary needs, and qualified dietitian must counsel residents regarding therapeutic diets and other dietary issues. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of residents need for assistance in emergency situations, assessment of the individual’s needs and preferences, assessment of residents current diagnoses and medical history, and assessment of allergies and dietary needs. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, management of self-administered medications, and reminding residents to take medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program.
