Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides aid, care, and supervision to healthy seniors who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly offer chances for social activity, assistance with daily activities, and assistance with transportation and appointments. In certain situations, communities may provide “aging in place”, nursing care, or respite. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . The state of Massachusetts maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, observing residents while they take the medication, and opening containers and pre-packaged medications. Staff must obtain training in a number of areas. These include: Review of the aging process, Dementia/cognitive impairment, 7-hour general orientation , and communication skills. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and assistance with activities of daily living . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a qualified dietitian must review residents’ dietary needs, communities must provide up to three regularly scheduled meals daily, communities must use daily recommended dietary allowances as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, and a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of residents ability to manage medications, assessment of residents need for assistance in emergency situations, assessment of the individual’s needs and preferences, and assessment of allergies and dietary needs. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
