Assisted living communities arrange residential communities and assistance for your loved one who require support with things such as bathing or self-administering medication. Assisted living communities usually offer help with appointments and transportation, opportunities for recreational activity, and care supervision. In certain cases, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or dementia care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regulates this community type. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, physical assistance to open and remove medications from a container, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, and occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These include: basic first-aid, fire and life safety, health and psychosocial needs, and residents’ rights. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as risk factor management needs, a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, problematic behaviors, and ability to self-administer medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be varied, meals must be properly prepared, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, and meals must be palatable.
