An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, supervision, and assistance to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities commonly offer assistance with transportation and appointments, help with daily activities, and opportunities for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or hospice. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland has specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene licenses this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be well-balanced, meals must be palatable, and meals must be varied. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, and assistance in accessing and coordinating health services. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: emergency disaster plans, Managers of programs licensed for five or more residents must complete 20 hours of Department-approved continuing education every 2 years, fire and life safety, and health and psychosocial needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission, reminders to take medications, and residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as risk factor management needs, evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, activities of daily living needs, and the assessment must be reviewed every 6 months.
