Assisted living communities offer social events, healthcare, and supervision to individuals who are about 65 years old. Services offered often include aid with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In certain situations, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, and reminders to take medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be well-balanced, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, meals must be varied, and meals must be palatable. Staff must receive training in a number of fields. These include: infection control, basic first-aid, emergency disaster plans, and health and psychosocial needs. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, activities of daily living needs, risk factor management needs, and treatment requirements. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, and occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
