An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers supervision, care, and aid to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing services. The types of service offered often involve aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select instances, communities may offer continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene governs this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents Staff members receive training in a number of subjects. These include: basic first-aid, including standard precautions, infection control, and basic food safety. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be properly prepared, meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, and meals must be palatable. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include physical assistance to open and remove medications from a container, reminders to take medications, and assistance with self-administration of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, ability to self-administer medication, the assessment must be reviewed every 6 months, and risk factor management needs.
