Assisted living communities provide supervision, social interaction, and personal care to people around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In certain cases, communities may offer respite, Alzheimer’s care, or “aging in place”. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene supervises this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be well-balanced, meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be properly prepared, and meals must be palatable. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living. Staff must receive training in a number of areas. These areas include health and psychosocial needs, Managers of programs licensed for five or more residents must complete 20 hours of Department-approved continuing education every 2 years, emergency disaster plans, and fire and life safety. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include physical assistance to open and remove medications from a container, assistance with self-administration of medications, and reminders to take medications. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, ability to self-administer medication, assessed on psychiatric conditions, and the assessment must be reviewed every 6 months.
