Assisted living communities administer social opportunities, oversight, and care to people who are about 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities often offer chances for organized activity, care supervision, and assistance with transportation and appointments. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be properly prepared, meals must be varied, and meals must be palatable. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, and uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as ability to self-administer medication, evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, treatment requirements, and assessed on psychiatric conditions. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, assistance with self-administration of medications, and reminders to take medications.
