Assisted living communities administer personal care, oversight, and social interaction to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often include support with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, respite, or hospice. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. The state of Indiana maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. Indiana State Department of Health licenses this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must meet daily dietary requirements and requests, communities must provide three meals a day, meals must provide a balanced distribution of the daily nutritional requirements, and communities must consider residents’ reasonable religious preferences. communities must consider residents’ personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident’s room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include identifying responses to actual or potential health conditions, activities and programs appropriate to residents’ abilities and interests, a nursing diagnosis, and scheduled transportation for community-based activities. These provisions include resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified, preparation of prescribed medications, and Medications may be administered under physician’s order by licensed nursing personnel or qualified medication aides. Staff must receive training in a variety of areas. These areas include ethical considerations, first-aid, resident needs, and resident’s rights. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation must be updated at least semi-annually or when a significant change in condition occurs, A comprehensive assessment, a negotiated risk plan will be established, and community will identify scope of care based on evaluation. Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program.
