Tour experience

I toured with Chapman Place and it was very nice - this was our second choice. I really did like this facility a lot, but my mom has 9 kids and most of us live further away from here so we decided to move her where she would be closer to us. So really it just came down to the location.

Tour of Chapman Place

I toured Chapman Place; the tour itself was great, but the community was really unimpressive to me. I know memory care units are always so different compared to assisted living or other populations. I know it has to be watered down and I know memory care is usually not as nice. When you walk in, it's a beautiful facility; but when you get up to the memory care unit, it's very dingy and run down. The area is small and there's not a lot of space for residents to move around in. It had a distinct nursing home smell. It felt very bleak and not comfortable at all.

My Summary of Chapman Place

The friendliness, the cleanliness, and the staff are all very nice. The food could use some improvement. The staff and chef are friendly and nice, but the system of ordering a meal isn't a friendly atmosphere. It's not cheery, it looks rough, and its not open or inviting. Residents can't see what's going on because the kitchen is closed off and behind closed doors; it's kind of tucked into in a closet-like room. With the menu selection - the residents have to circle their upcoming meals, which can be very confusing. My parents have Alzheimer's and dementia, so its just mind boggling to them. Besides writing their name on the paper, the action of circling the menu is tricky. For example: choosing the main entrée, side, etc.. I wish they would just say, "We're serving this tonight with these options." The meal selections are very limited, and kind of yucky - it doesn't taste very good. My parents may not be "circling" correctly. When I've been there there's only one CNA and maybe she does help, but I don't know. And if she does, she would have to help the whole room - so I'm unsure if they're getting enough food if they aren't understanding the concept. There's something wrong with the food and with the entire system, they're having issues in that area. My mom also has to bring her own Splenda because they don't serve it, so she has to remember to bring it down for every meal. I wish they had that available, as well as Sweet'n Low. I just wish there were different options for sweetener already available for the residents. In regards to the activities, they just hired [name removed], the new activities director. Since she's started my parents have gone to a Luau, an ice cream social, and a movie. They've attended more activities in the last two weeks than their entire stay. So she's wonderful; I would say A+ to her! Communication between the community and our family is good. The nurse will call if something is wrong or if something has happened. She'll let us know what steps they've taken or what medications they've administered. The communication is very open and I like that. I would recommend Chapman Place to others, they just need to improve on the food.

Feels like home

We chose Chapman Place because the proximity to our family home as well as the rehab center that they have on site. It definitely has a family type homey environment which we really like. There are a lot of men here so he has been able to make a lot of friends and interact which is great because he is definitely a guys guy. We would recommend them to others.

Beautiful facility

We chose Chapman Place because of the convenient location as well as the cost, it was the best that I was able to find in the area. The room sizes here are on the smaller side but adequate. We are able to come and go as we please as long as we wear a mask, but you have to visit in your loved ones rooms. I would recommend them to others looking.

There is no better place we would want our mom to be

The staff members and everybody there is just absolutely wonderful. We could not be happier with where our loved one is at. The care she is getting is incredible. From what our loved one can remember the food is good, she has gained weight and yet to complain. As far as activities go, they are doing stuff all the time and keeping the residents busy. We do think the value for cost is perfect.

Extra Care, Extra Eyes

The one thing I really like about Chapman Place is that they seemed to spend time trying to get to know my loved one and our family. Some of the places I talked to would say "Oh, we've got high speed internet and a great space for working out." My loved one was advanced in age, and couldn't see very well. We just needed more eyes on her to help with her dementia. I didn't need to be spending a ton of money for services that my loved one would not need or use. I wanted to spend money on her care. And I feel like they provided good care here. They would send us pictures of our loved one playing Bingo, or putting puzzles together. They would take her outside for walks, because she loved to be outside. The care you choose just depends on personality and level of care that you need. It was a tough situation as Covid began to hit, but Chapman Place did their best in that situation. When residents did contract Covid, they were confined to their room, which is tough on dementia patients. But that would have been the case anywhere. Chapman Place did the best they could, and I completely understand . If there ever was an issue, they would call me. It didn't matter what time of day, if something happened, they called me. They responded appropriately for falls, notifying me immediately and providing medical care if needed. You worry about the potential for places to cover these things up, especially since you can't go in to visit during Covid. But Chapman Place was very upfront and did a very nice job with communication.

Upfront cost was more than some others but was a fixed rate and there were not any add on charges so was less in the long run and easy to budget. The layout is great and the room sizes were good. They had a home-like feeling. The staff was very good. We would recommend them to others.

A Place for Mom has scored Chapman Place 9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
