Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care for people who may need a helping hand with taking medication or mobility. The services offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, communities must document such assessment, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, reading the label, and unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These include: providing assistance with activities of daily living, 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, resident behavior and needs, and universal precautions. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care services, nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and assistance with activities of daily living .
