Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, supervision, and support to medically stable individuals who do not need skilled nursing services. The services offered often involve support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In some instances, communities may offer respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication, and licensed nursing staff may administer medications. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, resident rights, resident behavior and needs, and community sanitation procedures. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with self-administration of medications, and personal care services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, and meals must be adapted to residents preferences. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and communities must document such assessment.
