An assisted living community is a residential community which provides aid, supervision, and support to independent persons who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities frequently offer chances for recreational activity, care supervision, and help with appointments and transportation. In certain cases, communities may provide continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, licensed nursing staff may administer medications, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, nursing services, and assistance with activities of daily living . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , meals must be adapted to residents preferences, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, and meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , medical examination report, and monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician . There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include reporting incidents, emergency evacuation, resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, and universal precautions. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program.
