An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, support, and care to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with the activities of daily life, help with transit and appointments, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or skilled nursing. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division governs this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, and meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include knowledge of community services and resources, medication policies and procedures, need for professionall help, and Administrators must complete 40 hours of continuing education units every 2 years. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program.
