Assisted living communities administer social events, supervision, and personal care to people around 65 years old. Services provided often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select cases, communities may offer “aging in place”, skilled nursing care, or dementia care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, and meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: knowledge of community services and resources, knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care, and psychosocial aspects of aging. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
