Assisted living communities offer apartment-style housing and social events as well as individual help. Assisted living communities frequently provide opportunities for recreational activity, assistance with transit and appointments, and supervision of care. In certain situations, communities may provide “aging in place”, respite, or Alzheimer’s care. Wisconsin maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) certifies this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include provision of personal care, challenging behaviors, development of service plans, and fire safety. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, supervision, behavior management, and resident-specific services.
