Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers aid, support, and supervision to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services offered often involve aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, “aging in place”, or nursing care. Wisconsin maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this community type. Staff must obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include standard precautions, fire safety, resident rights, and medication management. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and these meals must meet residents special dietary needs. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, and initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, behavior management, activity programming for persons with dementia, and leisure time activities.
