Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individual assistance. Assisted living communities usually provide supervision of care, assistance with transportation and appointments, and opportunities for social activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing care. The state of Virginia maintains specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services supervises this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: reporting requirements, procedures for detecting suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, confidential treatment of personal information, and emergency and disaster plans, including those for evacuating residents.. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications, and Medications may be administered by licensed individuals or by medication aides . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as Initial comprehensive assessment and develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include Meet residents physical, mental, emotional, and psychosocial needs, Assessing residents for whom restraints are in us, Promote a sense of security and self-worth, and Meet the service plan objectives. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist, three nutritious meals must be provided each day, and bedtime and between meal snacks must be available.
