An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers supervision, aid, and care to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing care. Services offered often involve support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, skilled nursing, or respite. Ohio maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medication review, psychological history, health history, and functional status assessment. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders, observation, and handing medications to resident. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, personal care, assistance with self-administration of medication, and activities. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These areas include job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, residents rights, and community procedures. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare.
