Assisted living communities offer organized social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individualized help. Assisted living communities frequently offer opportunities for leisurely activity, supervision of care, and support with daily activities. In certain situations, communities may provide nursing care, continuing care, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include pharmaceutical services, dietary services, assist with personal care, and recreational activities. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Staff must receive education in a variety of fields. These include: caring for residents with impairment, pain management, infection control/prevention, and assisted living concepts. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, and maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, routines and preferences, and a health care assessment.
