Assisted living communities provide personal care, supervision, and social interaction to persons around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities often provide chances for recreational activity, aid with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, nursing, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, promoting independence in activities of daily living, preservation of resident dignity, and (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, 24-hour care, assistance with administration of medications, and assistance with recreational activities. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority.
