Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer oversight, personal care, and social opportunities to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Services provided often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some cases, communities may offer nursing, respite, or continuing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff must receive training in a variety of areas. These include: techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, working with residents with mental illness, mentally confused residents, and instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include 24-hour care, assistance with storage of medications, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and assistance with administration of medications. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals.
