Assisted living communities provide apartment style housing and social interaction as well as personalized support. Assisted living communities commonly provide chances for leisurely activity, supervision of care, and support with the activities of daily life. In some situations, communities may offer hospice, respite, or nursing. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . Michigan has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses governs this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: administration of medication, supervision, containment of infectious disease, and residents rights and responsibilities. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, supervised personal care, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, and being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts.
