Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and assistance to people who might require help with things such as taking medication or showering. Services offered often involve support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, “aging in place”, or dementia care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, and uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness, including standard precautions, basic food safety, and Managers of programs licensed for five or more residents must complete 20 hours of Department-approved continuing education every 2 years. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be varied, meals must be palatable, meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, and programs must provide three meals a day and snacks. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessed on psychiatric conditions, activities of daily living needs, treatment requirements, and a comprehensive mental and physical assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications, staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission.
