Assisted living communities provide social opportunities, oversight, and personal care to individuals who are about 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly offer care supervision, chances for leisurely activity, and support with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, nursing, or Alzheimer’s care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as personal preferences relative to care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, whether family supports are available, and A written care plan must document the assessment findings. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These include: training necessary to carry out assigned job duties, hand hygiene, general infection control principles, and assisting residents in transferring and ambulation. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, assisting residents with storage of medications, and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, assisted living care, and described as personal services. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program.
