Assisted Living in Sarasota, Florida

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living communities offer housing and care to seniors who want some help with day-by-day things like taking medications, preparing meals and keeping up with housecleaning. Assisted living facilities come in all shapes and sizes, so visiting them is the most effective way to determine which one is most beneficial for you or your family member.

What Services Are Offered in Assisted Living?

No assisted living community is like another. At a minimum, assisted living gives independently minded seniors foods and snack foods, help with things such as showering and getting dressed, and a wide variety of activities such as health and wellness programs, social events, outings plus much more, all in a safe and secure setting with people their peers.

What Are ADLs?

If you are exploring assisted living, you’ve most likely run into the acronym ADLs, which stands for the Activities of Daily Living. These include:

  • Bathing and showering
  • Toileting
  • Dressing
  • Feeding (however, not meal planning)
  • Continence
  • Functional mobility, which include getting in and out of a bed or chair

Developed in the 1950s, ADLs assess a person's overall health and function. In general, elderly adults who can manage ADLs on their own but who are considering a switch to senior living could be better prospects for independent living. Should you have questions about what care type may be the best match for your family member, call A Place for Mom. Our Senior Living Advisors can answer any queries you may have about assisted living, independent living, memory care, life plan communities and more.

Assisted Living Vs. Nursing Homes

The word “assisted living” was initially used in the 1980s to describe a innovative kind of residential living for old adults that was notably not the same as more regular nursing home models. Assisted living is designed for individuals who need some help with daily activities but who still would like level of independence and who want to live in an apartment-like situation like a studio or a one-bedroom apartment. A large number of assisted living communities offer a complete calendar of activities and events and provide multiple meal choices to accommodate the diverse tastes and preferences, including special diet plans and restaurant-style options. Small pets are often permitted.

In contrast, the hallmark of nursing homes is that they provide skilled nursing care. They are designed to meet the needs of seniors and other people who have medical conditions that must have 24x7 medical attention. Meals are usually served in a central dining area and residents live in private or shared bedrooms. Some nursing homes also include short-term therapeutic care. Nursing homes today are also known as convalescent care centers, nursing centers, skilled nursing facilities and long-term care facilities. Since they offer more help and support, nursing homes are more expensive than assisted living communities.

Both skilled nursing and assisted living communities may offer memory care, which is specific support for individuals coping with cognitive impairment. Actually, 40% of the people who live in the state of Florida are currently living with some form of Alzheimer's, based on the National Center for Assisted Living. In general, people living with the initial levels of Alzheimer’s or dementia are effectively supported by assisted living communities while people living with later stages of Alzheimer's require the medical care of a nursing home.

What Is Assisted Living Like?

Whilst every facility is distinct, here are a few features that many assisted living communities share:

  • They offer different degrees of care, sometimes at varied prices.
  • They offer different living choices, from studios to one-bedroom apartments.
  • Many permit residents to bring their private small pets, including birds, cats and in some instances smaller dogs.
  • They cater to differing backgrounds, traditions and interests. Some communities, for example, are faith-based, while some are multilingual, with activities and dining choices to complement. Still more are designed for retired armed service or college or university alumni and might be even situated on or near university campuses.
  • They could offer accommodations for spouses along with individuals.
  • They range in size. Some communities have only 20 residents, while some many have significantly more than 200.

With so many options to choose from, choosing the best community can seem overwhelming. Our Senior Living Advisors will help. They live in the areas they serve. When you talk to a Senior Living Advisor, she or he will ask a few pre-determined questions to better learn what you are looking for, what your budget is going to be and what particular desires your family member may have. Best of all their advice is cost-free!

When Is It Time to Consider Assisted Living?

If you are asking this question, chances are good that it’s time you learn more about senior living. Below are a few other hints that assisted living may be ideal for both your loved one and your family:

  • You are concerned for your loved one’s health and safety.
  • You are concerned they aren’t eating properly.
  • You feel concerned about them leaving the home by themselves.
  • You see they are spending less time with family and friends.
  • You receive a telephone call or note from a next door neighbor who is worried about them.
  • You discover that your family member may have problems remembering people’s names or working with a well-known technology like their mobile phone or TV remote control.

If these or a variety of other signs are troubling you, do something. Contact A Place for Mom and speak to a Senior Living Advisor today. They can reply to your questions and assist you to figure out next steps. Best of all, their knowledge is cost-free!

Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings

Florida supplies families with excellent usage of its assisted living inspection and ratings records. Based on our state-by-state review of state records, Florida’s assisted living regulation and inspection program is among the most transparent in the nation. To find the records of an assisted living facility in the wider Sarasota area, go to the FloridaHealthFinder.gov site and search by community type to obtain inspection reviews, licensure data, penalties and actions assessed against the facility, availability of nursing staff, an emergency power plan overview and more.

The state of Florida requires that all new assisted living residents have a medical evaluation within a month of move-in to identify an individualized care strategy. The state also requires a standard number of weekly staff member hours based on the number of individuals who live in a facility to make sure care plans can be accommodated.

10 Things to Look For When Touring an Assisted Living Facility

The best way to find out if an assisted living facility is ideal for your loved one is to see one -- or even better, four or five of them! Here are some things to observe when you tour:

  1. Does the personnel interact with the residents?
  2. Is the facility clean, odor-free and well taken care of?
  3. Is there a process in place for evaluating the requirements of a brand new resident?
  4. Can residents arrange for transport if they require it?
  5. Are the staff professional and courteous?
  6. Are there specific visiting times or are family and friends welcome anytime?
  7. Does each resident possess a care plan set up?
  8. What happens if a resident’s needs change?
  9. Is there a crisis program in place in case of a natural or manmade disaster?
  10. Do the people who live there remind you of your family member?

For more tips on the things to look for while touring an assisted living facility, see our Planning and Advice webpages.
