Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and aid for seniors who may need help with everyday activities such as taking medication or mobility. Assisted living communities commonly provide help with daily activities, outings for leisurely activity, and supervision of care. In some cases, communities may provide continuing care, nursing, or Alzheimer’s care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this community type. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, and assistance with activities of daily living . Staff are required to receive education in a number of areas. These areas include 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, community sanitation procedures, resident rights, and providing assistance with activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician .
