Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and aid to your loved one who might need support with bathing or cooking meals. The services offered often involve support with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may provide respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division certifies this community type. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include first-aid, the aging process, residents’ rights, and housekeeping and sanitation procedures. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , and the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board.
