An assisted living community is a residential community which provides care, assistance, and support to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The types of service provided often include aid with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select situations, communities may provide nursing, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, and communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care, need for professionall help, 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, and the aging process. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program.
