Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide care, recreational activities, and supervision to persons who are about 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently provide support with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and outings for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or Alzheimer’s care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains specific rules related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division regulates this community type. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. Staff must receive education in a number of areas. These include: first-aid, knowledge of community services and resources, the aging process, and 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , and the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
