Assisted living communities administer care, oversight, and social opportunities to people around 65 years of age or older. Services provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In certain instances, communities may provide respite, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has specific rules related to this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, and meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions, how to recognize early signs of illness, medication policies and procedures, and residents’ rights.
