Assisted living communities arrange residential communities and aid to seniors who need support with things such as dressing or self-administering medication. Assisted living communities usually offer support with daily activities, chances for organized activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or hospice. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, and meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians. Staff must receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care, how to recognize early signs of illness, and residents’ rights.
