Assisted living communities offer social interaction, care, and oversight to individuals who are on average 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities often offer help with appointments and transportation, assistance with daily activities, and chances for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, hospice, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , and meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These include: 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions, skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care, and knowledge of community services and resources. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
