Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social interaction as well as personalized support. The types of service provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, nursing, or Alzheimer’s care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, and meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: residents’ rights, Administrators must complete 40 hours of continuing education units every 2 years, knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, and the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions.
