Boston Senior Living Resources

Boston is a sprawling city that offers a rich history, a high quality of life for its residents and easy access to a variety of amenities. A popular destination for history enthusiasts, Boston is an ideal retirement location for seniors who enjoy exploring parks, landmarks and public gardens. It offers a wide range of options for senior living that suit every lifestyle and budget. With its year-round events, its cultural diversity and its unique amenities, Boston is an exciting place to live.

Cost of Senior Living in Boston, MA

The Greater Boston Area has the seventh highest number of adults age 55 and older in the nation, behind the DC area and ahead of the Detroit area. However, it is the second most expensive metro area of the 30 metro areas most populated by older adults.

Because Boston is surrounded by many upscale suburban cities, it turns out that it is over 10% less expensive for seniors to live within the Boston city limits than in the metro area as a whole, according to the Senior Living Cost Index at A Place for Mom. There are, however, a few suburban cities that are more affordable than Boston, including Brockton, Brighton, Chelsea and Mattapan. Brockton and Chelsea are among the top 10 poorest cities in Massachusetts.

How Senior Living Costs Compare to Residential Real Estate

  • Home prices in the Boston area increased by 4.4% from 2014 to 2015 according to Redfin, a national real estate brokerage.
  • Senior living costs increased by 2.5% in the state of Massachusetts during that same period.
  • Homes in the Boston area stayed on market for an average of 51 days in 2015.

It is no surprise that high-income cities make the top of the list. Consider Weston (home to FedX CEO Anant Agarwal, and Stephen Pagliuca, co-owner of the Boston Celtics), Wellesley (home to notable Wellesley and Babson Colleges) and Sudbury (boasting a median household income of over $160K). In such places, you’ll find not only the most expensive senior living communities in Massachusetts, but some of the most expensive in the US.
