Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

As the heart of Rhode Island, Providence is a stalwart of East Coast culture. The city also claims to have the most restaurants per capita of any other major U.S. city. For arts and culture in the city, there are a number of options including the Providence Black Repertory Company, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tony award-winning Trinity Repertory Company.

During the summer, the city hosts WaterFire which is a massive environmental art installation where 100 bonfires are lit along the banks of the three rivers that pass through downtown Providence. The city also boasts one of the oldest public library systems in the country, which includes the Providence Athenaeum which was founded in 1831 but has roots all the way back to 1751. The library was a favorite of Edgar Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. For recreation, the city is interspersed with a 1,200 acre park system.

One popular park in the system is Roger Williams Park which includes a zoo, botanical garden, a planetarium, and a natural history museum. With plenty of options for both culture and retirement, living in Rhode Island does not get much better than Providence.

Transportation

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) offers low-cost bus service throughout Rhode Island. The bus routes operate all over the city, from the Roger Williams Park Zoo to Federal Hill to Thayer Street and more. The city also operates a trolley line that runs through downtown.
