Assisted Living in Williamsburg, Virginia

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living can be a long lasting senior care option including help for the routines of everyday living like providing meals, assistance with bathing, dressing and medication management. It isn't exactly like a nursing home, where residents can get round-the-clock professional nursing care. Every assisted living facility has its mixture of offerings, amenities, activities and lifestyle. Many also give support for seniors with particular needs such as diabetes, incontinence care or the initial levels of cognitive impairment as a result of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Assisted Living Vs. Memory Care

According to the National Center for assisted living, approximately one in 4 residents currently in assisted living in the state of Virginia experience Alzheimer’s disease or an additional type of dementia. Furthermore many assisted living communities provide support for people with cognitive issues. Just how do you know if memory care or simply assisted living is exactly what your family member needs?

Although some assisted living communities offer memory care onsite, each of the types of care won't be exactly the same. Memory care provides full-time dedicated assistance for someone with dementia while assisted living is made to meet the requirements of people who require help with the activities of daily living (ADLs) such as for example showering, dressing or eating. assisted living can be a good option for those in the earlier stages of Alzheimer’s but for people who have wandering concerns or who've caused harm to themselves or others, a protected memory care setting is most probably a much better choice.

If you have particular questions about what type of care your loved one requires, speak to a healthcare provider. They will help you decide whether assisted living will work or if you want to search for memory care. You can speak to one of our Senior Living Advisors. They have assisted many family members with questions about what type of services may be the best fit for their family member or friend and they will help you too.

What Services are available in Assisted Living?

While each community is unique, most assisted living communities give a number of living arrangements, a wide range of dining options, public areas and free transportation, among other services and features. These may include:

  • Activities, recreation and events both on-site and off
  • Exercise and wellness classes
  • Housekeeping, including linen services
  • Have access to medical experts

Assisted Living Inspections and Rankings in Virginia

The state of Virginia offers exceptional access to its records for assisted living communities through the Virginia Department of Social Services website. Data available to review contains the dates of inspection, whether an inspection was caused by a complaint, if the inspector discovered any violations and what the plan of correction is to handle any violations. Look by facility name or zip code to get the facilities in the areas you are thinking about.

In the state of Virginia, assisted living facilities are required for legal reasons to:

  • Allow only two individuals to reside in a single bedroom
  • Provide handrails, non-slip surfaces and grab bars in every bathtub and shower
  • Equip all bedrooms that have adjoining bathrooms with signaling equipment that residents are able to use in case they require help.

How Much Can Assisted Living Cost in Williamsburg, VA?

Based on the A Place for Mom Senior Living Cost Index, the typical cost of assisted living in the greater Williamsburg, Virginia, area in ranges from $1500 to $8790 monthly. Costs for assisted living can differ widely based on services, amenities and location, so it pays to look in neighboring suburbs and towns when you have that flexibility

The Senior Living Cost Index is based on the actual prices families pay if they transfer to assisted living in fact it is the only cost index of its kind. For more information about senior living costs, visit the A Place for Mom Senior Living Cost Planner.

How to Finance Assisted Living

Many families finance a move to assisted living through the sale of a home or personal financial savings, but for a lot of people, this might not even be a choice. Listed here are three other assets that can assist you in paying for assisted living:

  • Veterans Benefits: Many seniors could be qualified to receive veterans benefits that they aren't aware of. One benefit specifically, Aid & Attendance, has helped a large number of households afford assisted living. To meet the criteria, veterans need to be at least 65 years and have served at least 90 days of active duty with at least 1 day during what the Veterans Administration considers active wartime time periods. Qualifying widows and widowers of veterans may also be eligible to receive benefits. With the average age of U.S. veterans at 64 years old it’s worthwhile to discover if your relative may be eligible for benefits. See our Guide to VA Benefits and Long-Term Care for information or contact the Virginia Department of Veterans Services or go to the Veterans Information for Virginia or the U.S. Veteran's web page at va.gov.
  • Life Insurance Policies: If the senior you are assisting during their move to assisted living possesses a life insurance coverage, you might be able to liquidate the plan and receive payment right now. Different limitations and rules apply depending on the type of program you have, so contact a monetary advisor or eldercare attorney to discover more about your alternatives and to evaluate what’s most effective for your circumstances.
  • Reverse Mortgages: For senior couples who may have different care needs, a reverse mortgage can also be a good method for just one person to move into assisted living as the other spouse remains at home. A reverse mortgage allows homeowners aged 62 or older to borrow against their home equity. For more information about reverse mortgages, contact the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to locate a reverse mortgage counseling agency in your in your city.

5 Things to Ask an Assisted Living Facility

Discovering the right assisted living facility is an enormous decision, both for a senior and for his or her family. Listed here are five items to consider when thinking about making the switch to assisted living:

  • What is the staff-to-resident ratio? Will this facility provide your relative with the support they might need? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 25% of assisted living communities possess a ratio of one personal care assistant for every 23 residents. Staffing may differ widely depending on the capacity of the community, so make sure to question the facilities you are thinking about their staff-to-resident ratio.
  • Are there exterior areas? For some residents making the change from their house to assisted living means giving up a cherished garden or yard, so being able to have a gardening area, deck or a courtyard is certainly important. Many larger assisted living facilities provide a selection of outdoor spaces with features which can include walking paths, raised gardening beds and BBQ areas for facility events.
  • How many workers are available to assist residents during the night? Some assisted living facilities provide 24x7 nursing employees, while others may just provide generalized help available after hours. In Virginia, assisted living facilities are required to provide at least two direct treatment providers awake and available at all times.
  • Does the city have a waitlist? Popular facilities fill quickly. If your favored community is not accepting new occupants, inquire about a waitlist and the community’s plan handling the wait list. Most facilities will require a deposit and some may have an additional lists for unique care needs. This is where carrying out your investigation can pay off -- plan in advance!
  • What providers are contained in the monthly cost? Before signing the agreement it’s important to know what is included in the standard monthly fee and what's available for an additional charge. Some communities make use of a fee-for-assistance model, or a la carte pricing, meaning they charge a standard charge for rent and meals but additional fees for providers such as medication administration or continence care. Others make use of a tiered pricing model where different levels of care are charged different charges.

How Do I Choose the best Assisted Living Community

With so many communities to choose from, finding an appropriate assisted living facility can be an intimidating task. That’s where our Senior Living Advisors can help -- they are experts at helping households match their loved ones to the services that'll be the best fit for their care needs, style and budget.

Here are some things to bear in mind during your search:

  • Make sure to consider the senior needing care and attention, not you. Today’s assisted living communities range from homey spaces to upscale resort-style grand living. It might be easy to be swayed by the features and services you might enjoy for yourself, but in the end it boils down to what is most effective for your family member.
  • Focus on what your loved one requires right now, not how they lived during the past. Does family member need help showering and dressing? Do they have particular needs like limited mobility or special diet programs? Would they prefer the benefits of larger community or feel more secure in a smaller, even more personal house? Consider the here and now not what would have been their personal preference ten or 15 years ago
  • Prepare to tour at least three to five communities when you can. Start with planned tours and consider having a meal with the residents. If none of the facilities you visit appear like good fit, talk to your Senior Living Advisor for extra options. And don’t hesitate to ask questions and take notes while you’re visiting communities.
